Job Mobility, Wage Dispersion, and Technological Change: An Asymmetric Information Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper develops a model of job mobility and wage dispersion with asymmetric information. Contrary to existing models in which the superior information of current employers leads to market collapse, this model generates a unique equilibrium outcome in which a) positive turnover exists and b) identical workers may be paid di¤erently. The model implies that, in the presence of technological change that is skill-biased and favors general skills over rm-speci c skills, the wage distribution becomes more spread out (corresponding to greater inequality) and job mobility increases. متن کاملAsymmetric Information and Search Frictions: A Neutrality Result
This paper integrates asymmetric information between firms into a canonical model of on-the-job search. Workers are heterogeneous in ability, but not all employers observe a worker’s type. Wage dispersion caused by search frictions makes the equilibrium wage distribution insensitive to informational asymmetries. Hence, the equilibrium outcome may be the same as when a worker’s ability is known ...
متن کاملLabor Market Dynamics: A Model of Search and Human Capital Accumulation
Informed by new measurements of labor market dynamics, I develop and estimate an equilibrium search model of worker mobility. I first describe new facts about the dynamics of wages across involuntary unemployment spells in Denmark. This implies that the job-ladder search model cannot by itself explain all the observed movements of workers between firms. I construct a new model of worker mobilit...
متن کاملThomas K . Bauer , and Peggy David Labour Market Entry Conditions , Wages and Job Mobility
Economic conditions at the time of labour market entry can induce wage diff erentials between workers entering the labour market at diff erent points in time. While the existence and persistence of these entry wage diff erentials are well documented, little is known about their interaction with employees’ mobility behaviour. This paper contributes to this research area by analyzing the interact...
متن کاملJob Mobility among Workers with Disabilities
Using data from the 1990 Survey of Income and Program Participation, this paper examines both the mobility patterns of workers with disabilities and the wage effects of job changes by observing workers’ within-firm and across-firm job changes over a 20-month period. There is no difference in the probability of internal (within-firm) job changes between workers with and without disabilities. Wor...
